Jim Lutz, K.C.

Partner, King's Counsel

Jim Lutz

Jim Lutz is a senior criminal defence lawyer whose practice has been shaped by more than three decades of courtroom work in Alberta. He acts in serious and complex criminal matters, including prosecutions that require detailed evidentiary analysis, careful legal judgment, and experienced advocacy at trial and on review.

His work has included many of the province’s most serious and high-profile cases. Over the course of his career, he has developed a reputation for steady courtroom presence, disciplined legal analysis, and the kind of judgment that matters when the allegations are significant and the consequences are substantial.

A Longstanding Criminal Defence Practice

Born and raised in Calgary, Jim was admitted to the Alberta bar in 1992 and has spent his career in criminal law. His practice has included a wide range of serious Criminal Code matters, from homicide and sexual assault allegations to fraud, conspiracy, firearms offences, impaired driving defence, and other contested criminal cases.

That depth of experience matters. Serious criminal files rarely turn on one issue alone. They often require careful attention to witness reliability, evidentiary detail, procedural fairness, and the legal framework governing the prosecution. Jim’s practice reflects a sustained focus on those questions and on the strategic decisions that shape a defence from the earliest stage of a matter through trial and, where appropriate, appeal or review.

Courtroom Experience and Professional Standing

Jim is regularly before the courts and has been involved in more than 140 reported cases, including matters that have drawn substantial public attention in Alberta. His experience includes work in difficult and legally demanding files where the record is extensive, the legal issues are contested, and the result may turn on precise advocacy and close analysis.

In addition to his defence practice, Jim has held significant leadership roles within the legal profession. He has served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta and as President of the Calgary Bar Association. He was appointed King’s Counsel in recognition of his contribution to the legal community and his longstanding work in criminal law.

Teaching, Lecturing, and Legal Community Work

Jim’s professional work has also included teaching, guest lecturing, and public legal education. Over the decades, he has contributed to legal education initiatives, trial advocacy programs, and professional development efforts involving lawyers, students, and other institutions in Alberta.

That broader work reflects his standing within the profession, but the centre of his practice remains criminal defence. He continues to act in serious matters requiring judgment, preparation, and direct courtroom advocacy.
