L. Kim Ross, K.C.

Partner, King's Counsel

L. Kim Ross, K.C.

Kim is a senior criminal defence lawyer whose practice has been built over decades in Calgary courtrooms. He acts in serious and complex criminal matters, and is known for practical judgment, longstanding courtroom experience, and a steady approach to cases where the consequences are immediate and significant.

His career has been devoted exclusively to criminal defence. He represents clients in all criminal code and related criminal law matters. Kim has successfully defended clients on homicide matters, drug charges, assault, fraud, theft and impaired driving. Kim also represents clients on civil forfeiture matters arising from criminal charges. Simply put, Kim has the experience and litigation skills to successfully defence his clients’ interests in their criminal matters.

A Lifetime in Criminal Law

Kim was raised in Calgary, and has spent his professional life in criminal law. His father was eminent criminal counsel and Kim grew up surrounded by criminal law. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary, completed his law degree at the University of Alberta, and was admitted to the Alberta bar in 1988. Kim practices mainly in Alberta and also in British Columbia.

Kim’s commitment to practicing in Alberta has allowed him to develop a familiarity with the courts and court process, providing ease of mind to his clients that their matter will be handed professionally throughout the process.

Courtroom Experience

Kim has appeared at all levels of court in Alberta and has also appeared in trial courts in British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. His criminal defence practice has included many reported decisions, a high volume of contested matters, and repeated work in the most serious categories of prosecution.

Kim understands that criminal charges are often accompanied by significant legal, personal, and reputational consequences. Kim uses his experience and familiarity with the system to advise clients of potential consequences of criminal matters and eliminate and minimize the impact of those consequences.

That experience includes over 60 homicide trials and a vast range of other criminal offences at every level of Alberta’s courts. While known for his work in homicide, his practice has remained active in charges as well as a broad range of other criminal allegations carrying significant legal, personal, and reputational consequences. His practice has also remained active in charges involving impaired driving, drug offences, sexual assault, domestic violence, theft, fraud, and related Criminal Code matters. He is regularly relied upon in cases where seasoned judgment and direct courtroom experience matter from the outset.

Teaching and Professional Reputation

In addition to his defence work, Kim has lectured at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University, and has instructed at the Alberta bar admission course for newly called lawyers. That work reflects the standing he has developed within the legal community over a long criminal defence career.

Kim's practice is now largely referral driven given his extensive experience and familiarity with the court process. These referrals speak to the level of confidence others place in Kim's judgement.
